Statement on Kosovoand the ICTY
Delivered by Ambassador David T. Johnson

to the Permanent Council, Vienna

August 26, 1999

The US supports the position of the European Union, that parties competing in the elections in Federal Republic of Yugoslavia should not have officeholders or candidates presently indicted or convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Those indicted by the ICTY do not belong in office; they belong in The Hague. It is our view that the Serbian people can best deal with past atrocities by bringing to justice those who are individually responsible for these events.

Since its establishment, the United States has strongly supported the work of the ICTY, and calls for the immediate transfer to The Hague of all indictees currently residing in Serbia.
