Statement on the Czech Press
Delivered by Ambassador David T. Johnson
to the Permanent Council, Vienna
January 11, 2001

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

I would like to join Mr. Duve in expressing gratitude to the Czech government for responding so quickly and openly to his recent inquiries.

The January 4 letter from the Czech Foreign Minister clearly outlines the issues that surround the strike and it also details his government's response in submitting a draft act to Parliament on independence of the public service media.

This quick action by the Czech government and the continuing open debate within Czech society indicate a strong and a healthy commitment to freedom of the media and freedom of speech.  The return of the blocked newscasters to Czech television on January 10 is another indication of this ongoing and peaceful process.

Finally, Mr. Chairman, we welcome the continuing engagement of Mr. Duve in this issue.  We believe that it is a helpful and proper application of his mandate.

Thank you.
