Statement on Yugoslavia
Delivered by Ambassador David T. Johnson
to the Permanent Council, Vienna
January 25, 2001

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

I would like to state my appreciation for our Yugoslav colleague for bringing this issue before the Council.

The United States views with concern the situation in the Presevo Valley.  We have made clear on a number of occasions, and we do today, that we reject terrorist actions and we regret the recent increase in the use of force in this area.

We have consistently encouraged moderation from all sides, both on a bilateral basis and with our allies, and with all KFOR troop-contributing states.

We will continue to seek to find ways to help address the Presevo Valley crisis working with the legitimate authorities of the Government of Yugoslavia.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
