Like my Turkish colleague and, I presume, everyone
else around the table, I listened closely to the
presentation that was made by our Georgian colleague, as
well as by the Russian Ambassador. This is indeed a
tense time.
We have been in touch with both the Georgian and
Russian governments about the issues that have been
raised today, most recently and directly, I suppose,
through President Bush’s conversations with President
Shevardnadze in Washington. The United States recalls
its statements about support for Georgia’s independence
and territorial integrity. We urge all sides to exercise
restraint at what is a very sensitive time.
