Statement on Kyrgyzstan
Delivered by Ambassador Stephan M. Minikes

to the Permanent Council, Vienna

March 21, 2002

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

We would like to refer to an issue concerning Kyrgyzstan.

The United States Government is saddened that six protesters died and many protesters and police were injured, some very seriously, as a result of the March 17 and 18 events in Jalal-Abad Oblast.

We are concerned that both protesters and police have resorted to the use of violence and welcome Prime Minister Bakiyev's decision to travel to Jalal-Abad Oblast to mediate a peaceful resolution.

Finally, we want to commend the Kyrgyz Government's March 19 release of Legislative Assembly Committee Chairman Beknazarov pending the announcement of a verdict.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
