Nine Eleven & Europe, Sept 9

On September 9, Ambassador Kelly participated in an expert conference discussing the impact on media freedom of post-9/11 changes in worldwide security policy. The conference, organized by Reporters Without Borders Austria, Presseclub Concordia Vienna, Medienhaus Wien and the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media was held at the European Commission's Vienna conference venue.

Ambassador Kelly stressed the importance of freedom of expression during the event's first panel discussion, "Press Freedom versus Security Policy." He was joined by the OSCE's Representative on Freedom of the Media, Dunja Mijatovic, the President of the Austrian Commission for UNESCO, Eva Nowotny, and the Director of the European External Service, Gerhard Sabathil. The President of Reporter's Without Borders Austria, Rubina Moehring, moderated.

Also featured during the event was a USOSCE exhibition, “Remembrance and Resilience,” which included copies of newspaper front pages from around the world the day after the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York City and Washington and the crash of United Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
