2013 OSCE Events and Conferences
First Preparatory Meeting of the 21st OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum
On February 4 & 5, the OSCE met to exchange ideas with civil society, the business community, and other international organizations on how to lessen the energy industry's impact on the environment.
The meeting was the first of two run-up conferences to the 21st OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum, which will take place in Prague in September and identify ways OSCE participating States can work together to strengthen their mutual security and stability by improving the environmental footprint of energy-related activities.
Matthew Murray, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasia at the U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration, led the U.S. delegation at the meeting, where he emphasized the need to incorporate the OSCE's 2012 Good Governance Declaration to improve transparency, accountability, and integrity in energy markets.
The U.S. also supported the participation of Jonas Moberg, Head of the International Secretariat of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), at the meeting. Moberg presented the EITI's good work in promoting transparency in the energy industry at a session on sustainable management of energy resources.
The next preparatory meeting will take place in Kyiv, Ukraine, in April.
