Political Officer Urfa Qadri and DCM Gary Robbins Brief Students of Washington DC's American University
On November 7, USOSCE Deputy Chief of Mission Gary Robbins and Political Officer Urfa Qadri briefed 25 students participating in a Peace and Conflict Resolution Seminar & Practicum organized by Washington DC's American University.
Before arriving in Vienna, the students undertook a field trip through the Balkans where they met with political leaders, representatives of international organizations and NGOs, and war crime prosecutors.
After briefly introducing the OSCE, Ms. Qadri discussed USG policy goals in the Balkan region. Charge d'Affaires Robbins then talked to the students about OSCE efforts to maintain stability in the region and the importance of the OSCE's field operations. He paid special attention to the OSCE Mission in Sarajavo, which he himself headed until spring 2011.
After the presentations, the students engaged in a lively Q and A with the speakers. Among the topics that arose were OSCE efforts to strengthen civil society, the impact of the OSCE's election monitoring missions, and how the OSCE's media freedom principles are upheld.
