On Broadcasting Concerns in Moldova

The United States shares the concerns expressed by the Republic of Moldova about disinformation and the need to counter it. Disinformation is designed to misinform and mislead the public.
We believe that the best way to counter propaganda and its pernicious effects is not through less information, but more: to ensure viewers are well-informed and have access to multiple sources of information.
We urge Moldova to respond to disinformation in a way that does not limit the public’s access to information, especially in the run-up to the Parliamentary elections.
Mr. Chair, while we recognize Moldova’s concerns about disinformation, we nevertheless urge the Republic of Moldova to uphold a legal framework fully in line with its OSCE commitments, as well as its international obligations concerning the freedom of expression.
