On the Judgment of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
As delivered by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Harry Kamian
to the Permanent Council, Vienna
November 30, 2017
Thank you, Mr. Chair.
The United States notes the judgment of the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the case of Jadranko Prlić.
The United States supports the important work of the ICTY and respects its rulings.
We will continue to remember the victims of the horrific crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia. Yesterday’s judgment is an important step in holding to account individuals responsible for the suffering of the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We hope it can provide some sense of justice and closure to the victims and their families.
We urge all parties to respect the court’s verdict, refrain from divisive rhetoric, and rededicate themselves to continued reconciliation and peaceful coexistence. These are essential to the future of a stable, secure Bosnia and Herzegovina that safeguards the human rights of all.
Thank you, Mr. Chair.
