On the Agreement Between Prime Ministers Tsipras and Zaev

As delivered by Chargé d’Affaires Michele Siders

June 21, 2018

The United States very sincerely congratulates Greek Prime Minister Tsipras and Macedonian Prime Minister Zaev on the historic agreement to resolve the long-standing name dispute between their two countries. This resolution will benefit both countries and bolster regional security and prosperity.  The prime ministers demonstrated vision, courage, and persistence in their pursuit of a mutually-acceptable solution.  We also commend the commitment of UN mediator Matthew Nimetz for his steadfast efforts over more than two decades to end this dispute.

The United States praises the leadership and courage of both leaders, and their commitment to peace and stability in the region.

The United States fully supports this agreement and its successful implementation, which should deepen Macedonia’s Euro-Atlantic integration.  We continue to strongly support Macedonia in its efforts to join the EU and NATO.

Thank you, Mr. Chair.
