On Disputed Elections in Kyrgyzstan

As delivered by the Deputy Chief of Mission Courtney Austrian
to the Permanent Council, Vienna
October 8, 2020

Thank you, Mr. Chair.

The United States is following events in the Kyrgyz Republic closely. We ask all sides to refrain from violence and resolve the election dispute through peaceful means.

The United States stands with the Kyrgyz people as they decide their future, the composition of their government, and timing and methodology of how elections are organized. The United States respects the Kyrgyz Republic’s sovereignty and democratic form of government. The events of the last few days reflect internal, not external, political dynamics.

We call on Kyrgyzstan’s neighbors and international partners to refrain from violating its sovereignty during this delicate moment in its national history.

Thank you, Mr. Chair.
