On Elections in the Kyrgyz Republic
As delivered by Ambassador James S. Gilmore III
to the Permanent Council, Vienna
November 19, 2020
Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
I want to express my appreciation to my Kyrgyz colleague raising this topic today under “Any Other Business.” I would note that my government just announced it intends to provide timely assistance for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in the Kyrgyz Republic in 2021 in support of the Kyrgyz people as they choose their next representatives in government.
Our funds will support the Kyrgyz Republic as it reinforces its commitments to undertake inclusive, rules-based electoral reforms and oversight, including changes recommended by the recent OSCE electoral observation mission. Funds will also support the Central Election Commission in administering presidential and parliamentary elections that adhere to democratic standards and Kyrgyz law.
The United States has partnered with the Kyrgyz Republic since it began its transition to an independent democratic state since the early 1990s.
We remain committed to supporting the Kyrgyz government, its people, and civil society groups composed of ordinary citizens, who aim to protect democratic institutions, promote human rights, and conduct free and fair elections.
The United States looks forward to a new era of transparent democratic governance, vibrant civil society, and fair elections in the Kyrgyz Republic, which will promote political stability and economic prosperity. Mr. Chairman, the Kyrgyz Republic has the United States’ confidence and support.
Thank you, Mr. Chair.
