As I watched television reports last weekend my heart broke, along with so many others around the world, to see this latest attack in Turkey, and I reached out to our distinguished Turkish colleague to convey the shock and sadness that I felt.
The United States strongly condemns the heinous terrorist attack that occurred in Ankara on October 10. We condemn this senseless act of violence perpetrated against peaceful demonstrators. The United States extends its deepest condolences to the Turkish people, especially to the families of those killed, and wishes a full and speedy recovery to each of those injured.
The American people stand in solidarity with the people of Turkey, and we reaffirm our determination to work closely with Turkey to counter terrorism in all its forms. We encourage Turkish citizens to recommit to peace and stand together against terror. We also reaffirm the importance of respecting international law and protecting human rights in the fight against terrorism.
We welcome statements from within Turkey, and from across the OSCE region, condemning the attack and appealing for calm.
Thank you, Mr. Chair.
