The United States strongly condemns the abhorrent attacks that occurred in Brussels on March 22. These attacks were an assault against the Belgian people and many other nations who suffered losses in this outrage. We extend our most heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of those killed and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.
At our last Permanent Council meeting we offered our condolences to Turkey, a fellow participating State reeling from the pain of a terrorist attack. Sadly, we again open our deliberations by collectively mourning the loss of innocent lives.
The United States stands firmly with Belgium – a close friend and Ally – and with all of Europe in the face of this tragedy. These attacks serve as a stark reminder that we must unite and deepen our shared resolve to defeat terrorism. As President Obama stated, “We can – and will – defeat those who threaten the safety and security of people all around the world.”
Thank you, Mr. Chair.
